Meet Hiccup, Animal Ambassador

Hiccup is one of our two hedgehogs at Rescue Ranch! Hiccup has been with us since 2022 when his previous family decided they didn't have enough time to dedicate, and thought it was better for him to come and live at Rescue Ranch!

He is an African Pygmy Hedgehog and is about three years old. Hiccup can be a little shy sometimes, but has definitely come out of his shell since coming here!

Hedgehogs are actually nocturnal so he spends a majority of his day sleeping. His favorite activity is curling up, not in his bed, but under it! These guys originally come from Africa so they really like warmer temperatures. Their favorite foods are hedgehog pellets, mealworms, crickets, and the occasional small piece of fruit. They don't have great eyesight but they do have a great sense of smell, so in order to find their food they use their nose to sniff it out!

Hedgehogs can make great pets, but it is very important to socialize them at a young age so they aren't fearful as they get older. As with any pet, it is very important to research their care before making the lifelong commitment of pet ownership.
